Wielki Kopieniec: The Forest Traverse

Distance7.1 km
Elevation gain483 m
DifficultyMedium
Estimated time2 h 14 min
Chains: NoTechnical: No

Overview

This variant turns the Kopieniec hike into a logical one-way traverse: same panoramic summit and meadow drama, then a longer, quieter forest descent to Toporowa Cyrhla—Zakopane's high suburb with its own views back toward the ridge.

You trade a simple out-and-back for bus or taxi planning between start and finish, but gain variety and less repeated terrain. Footing and seasonal ice issues match the classic route on the ascent.

Ideal if you like point-to-point days and public transport; less ideal if you insist on returning to the same car without a shuttle.

Points of interest

  • Polana Kopieniec — A picturesque meadow with traditional wooden shepherd huts; famous for spring crocuses.
  • Wielki Kopieniec (1328 m) — A rocky summit providing an unobstructed panorama of the High and Western Tatras.
  • Olczyska Valley — Scenic glimpses of the deep forested valley below.
  • Toporowa Cyrhla — The final destination, offering high-altitude views back towards the High Tatras from the village level
