Overview

A loop in Korung National Park, in the City of Kalamunda. From the car park it swings south to the wall of Victoria Reservoir, then runs west and down to Munda Brook at the far end before climbing back to the start. The reservoir is reached at the dam wall, early on; the rest is forest.

Points of interest

Victoria Dam — At km 0.9 the loop turns off for a short out-and-back onto the wall, and returns the same way. This is the walk's one approach to the reservoir it is named for: the line does not follow the shore, and from here it turns away west into the forest.
Munda Brook Timber Tramway Bridge — A monument at the bottom of the loop, where a timber tramway once crossed Munda Brook. It sits at the tip of a short spur the route runs out and back, and it stands at the walk's lowest ground, 121 m; from here the route climbs back.
Weston Grave — A grave by the side of the track at km 5.83, near the top of the climb back. It is mapped as a memorial and carries the name Weston; the headstone is an infant's, Francis Weston.

Trail alerts

Navigate by the track, not by signs. Where the loop runs on waymarked ground the waymarks belong to the Mason Bird Heritage Trail, and they stop when that trail turns off; nothing on the ground after that names this walk. Numbered marker posts were reported by the walker who gave us the line, but no published source confirms them.
A quarter of the loop is on roads. They are vehicle tracks and service roads inside the park rather than public streets, and none of it is roadside verge, but they are wide enough to drive and the park is open to mountain bikes.
Seasonal closures and access bans on this walk have not been checked: no closure dataset for Western Australia is available to us. The department that manages the park publishes its own alerts - read them before setting out.

Trail character

131 m of climbing over the loop, between 121 m and 252 m above sea level.
It falls steadily from the start to the brook at the far end, then takes the height back in one long pull to the finish.
OpenStreetMap records a surface for only 2.9 km of the line - 2.8 km of it path, 120 m sealed - and nothing at all for the remaining 3.6 km, which is not evidence of easy going.
There are 55 m of steps.

Access & rules

The loop starts and finishes at a car park nine metres off the line, with room for about 76 cars.
Dogs and other pets are not allowed anywhere in Korung National Park.
There are no visitor facilities in the park - no drinking water and no toilets - so bring what you need.
