Overview

Valley miles plus a real Western Tatra summit: you still cross Chochołowska's gentle approach and hut, then branch onto steeper yellow trail toward Grześ (1,653 m) for grassy-top panoramas toward Slovakia and the main Western ridge.

The climb is a clear gear and fitness shift—roots, stone, and exposure to weather after the road walking. Dogs are not allowed on the summit trail even though the valley permits leashed dogs to the hut.

Mind seasonal morning closures on the yellow segment (spring window) so you do not start the final ascent too early. Solid boots and layers complete the picture.

Points of interest

Polana Chochołowska — A massive alpine meadow with numerous historic shepherd huts.
Wooden Chapel — The atmospheric Chapel of St. John the Baptist, known from the "Janosik" film.
Schronisko PTTK — A large mountain hut; try the "Chochołowski Dessert" (apple pie with forest fruits).
Grześ Summit (1653 m) — A flat, grassy summit offering a legendary panorama, including Mt. Wołowiec and Roháče peaks.
Alpine Flora — Observe the changing vegetation from valley forests to dwarf mountain pines.

Trail alerts

Seasonal Access Notice: The yellow trail to Grześ is closed daily from dusk until 8:00 AM (March 1 – May 15). Do not start the final ascent too early.
Dogs Restricted: Unlike the valley floor, dogs are strictly forbidden on the yellow trail to the peak.

Trail character

Surface: Long gravel road followed by a steep mountain trail with stones and roots.
Accessibility: No strollers allowed beyond the mountain hut.

National Park Rules: Dogs ARE allowed only on the valley floor (to the hut) but must be on a leash. Admission fee applies.
Sunset Rule: From March 1 to November 30, all TPN trails are closed from dusk to dawn to protect wildlife and for safety. Plan your return before sunset.
