Overview

This variant is the classic Kościeliska day plus the valley's signature "hidden lake" finish. You still enjoy the full gentle approach through gates and meadows to Ornak, then trade the wide road for a steeper forest path up to Smreczyński Staw.

The last stretch is noticeably tougher than the valley floor—roots, stones, and a real climb in a short distance—so it feels like a proper mountain reward. The wooden viewing platform at the lake often delivers mirror reflections of Bystra and Błyszcz.

Best for hikers who are fine with mud or ice in shoulder seasons and want Ornak's hut culture plus a more intimate, forest-lake climax. Strollers cannot continue beyond the hut on this add-on.

Brama Kantaka — A spectacular limestone "gate" where the valley narrows dramatically right at the start.

Schronisko PTTK na Hali Ornak — The historic hut at the valley’s end, serving as your base for the final climb.
Smreczyński Staw — An atmospheric forest lake. The wooden observation deck provides a perfect mirror reflection of the Bystra and Błyszcz peaks.

Trail alerts

Slippery Terrain: The rock surfaces can be very slick after rain. Walk carefully on the paved sections.
Physical Load: The 20-minute climb from the hut to the lake is significantly steeper than the rest of the route.
Crowd Alert: This is the second most popular valley in the Tatras. Start before 8:00 AM to enjoy the silence.

Access: Bus or car from Zakopane to Kiry.

National Park Rules: Strictly no dogs (except Chochołowska valley floor and Droga pod Reglami). No swimming in lakes. Admission fee applies.
Sunset Rule: From March 1 to November 30, all TPN trails are closed from dusk to dawn to protect wildlife and for safety. Plan your return before sunset.
