Overview

This extension keeps the classic Gąsienicowa loop and pushes to the turquoise glacial lake at 1,624 m—the emotional centre of the basin. Kościelec and the walls toward Zawrat tower overhead, so the scale shifts from "big views" to vertical cliff-and-water drama.

The approach from Murowaniec crosses slabs and steps that become hazardous with thin ice; winter and spring demand respect for avalanche terrain off-route. It is a clear step up in seriousness from the meadow alone.

Best for experienced day hikers with sturdy footwear, extra time, and calm judgment in snow. The lake is not a place for improvisation beyond marked trails.

Trail alerts

Avalanche Risk: The slopes around the lake are prone to avalanches in winter. In March, stick strictly to the marked trail and avoid going further toward Zawrat without proper skills.
Ice Hazard: The final path to the lake consists of large stone slabs that become extremely treacherous when covered in thin ice.

Surface: Rocky forest road followed by steep granite steps and scree near the lake.
Accessibility: Not suitable for casual hikers without proper footwear.

Parking: The trailhead is a no-car zone. Use public buses or taxis from Zakopane center.

National Park Rules: Strictly no dogs (except Chochołowska valley floor and Droga pod Reglami). No swimming in lakes. Admission fee applies.
Sunset Rule: From March 1 to November 30, all TPN trails are closed from dusk to dawn to protect wildlife and for safety. Plan your return before sunset.
