Overview

After the autumn rains, Serpentine Falls comes off the granite into a rock-lined pool. This walk is how you arrive there on foot — down the gorge through jarrah, not from the picnic lawn.

From Jarrahdale it is almost all downhill, along Gooralong Brook and then the river. Walked the other way it is almost all climb.

A good morning if you can leave a car at the falls when the gates open. Cooler from late autumn to mid-spring; wildflowers peak in September. A short falls stroll and Baldwin Bluff leave from the same picnic area.

Points of interest

Gooralong Brook Waterfalls — A waterfall on the brook, about halfway. Optional: a short path down to it, about ten minutes there and back.
Serpentine Falls — The reason for the walk, at the finish. After rain, water over granite into a rock-lined pool. Optional: the viewing path, about 15 minutes there and back.

Trail alerts

Do not climb or jump from the falls. The rock is wet and undercut and the drop is unfenced. Stay on the path.
The finish is at the other end of the gorge. On foot the only way back is the whole trail again, uphill. Arrange the pick-up, or leave a car there, before you set out.
The finish often fills and then closes to new visitors, usually before 10:00. Leave a car there first thing, and check Park Alerts the morning you travel.

Trail character

About three-quarters is path, about a quarter forest track.
About one eighth is steeper than one in ten. Loose stones, and slippery after rain — not for a pram.
Near the start it shares a stretch with Stacey's Loop. At the split, stay with the gorge.

Access & rules

Getting there: Car to Jarrahdale, or Transperth to Chestnut Road or Marginata Parade. Finish at Serpentine Falls on Falls Road.
Parking: Street parking near the start on Chestnut Road. Serpentine Falls Car Park at the finish.
Tickets and fees: Vehicle entry at the falls is $17 for a standard car; walking or cycling in is free. A park pass covers the fee.
Rules: No dogs or other pets.
Opening hours: Serpentine Falls gates, 8:30–17:00 every day.
Facilities: Toilets and gas barbecues at the finish. No camping — the Gooralong day-use area near Jarrahdale is closed.
