Overview

The path drops to the show mine, where a train still takes you into the workings that closed in 1974.

It is steep more than it is long: two climbs with a full descent between them, and the second is the longer.

A good half-day on its own; a full afternoon if you go underground. The village car park and the mine are both on the loop, so start at whichever suits the day.

Points of interest

Wasserburg — The so-called Wasserburg, a listed building at the start, with a board that explains it.
Besucherbergwerk Ramsbeck — The show mine, and the low point of the walk, 45 m off the path. Count an underground tour on top of the walking time.
alter Kamin am Bastenberg — The chimney of the old lead works, standing alone in the trees on the last descent.

Trail alerts

Village streets. About 2.1 km is on roads open to cars, most of it in Ramsbeck at the start and the finish. 134 m of Valmestraße has no pavement — share the carriageway there.
Mine train. Last departure around 16:00, and in the holidays and in the rain you can be turned away without a reservation. Book before you set out.

Trail character

Almost two thirds is forest track, about a fifth is sealed village street, the rest gravel and path.
A third of the walk is steeper than one in ten. Nothing needs hands.
Follow the B in a white diamond. Boards at the old workings explain what you are walking through.

Getting there: by car to Ramsbeck, or the Werdern bus stop 56 m from the start.
Parking: a car park 34 m from the start.
Tickets and fees: the show mine charges admission — 11 euros for adults with the underground tour, 4 euros for the museum alone.
Rules: the old spoil heaps are a nature reserve — stay on the path.
Opening hours: the show mine is Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–17:00.
Facilities: benches along the trail; the museum above ground is step-free.
